When Signs Replace the Saviour

When Signs Replace the Saviour

As the church scattered from Jerusalem due to persecution Philip travelled to Samaria preaching the Word as he went. Through his preaching a revival erupted in the city of Samaria, resulting in the city rejoicing. Amongst the multitude was a magician named Simon, who at first sight seemed to genuinely believe and receive the gospel. However, his self-serving desire for power and prestige soon revealed an unrepentant, unbelieving heart. This message draws out four things that cause a person to replace the Saviour with signs:

  1. A distorted view of self (vv. 9-11)
  2. A perverted view of the gospel (vv. 12-13)
  3. A warped view of God (vv. 14-19)
  4. A diminished view of sin (vv. 20-24)
