The Warning of Babel | Genesis 11:1-9

Over time the human race, under the leadership of Nimrod (Gen 10:10), collectively decided to settle together to preserve their unity and develop their fame by building a grandiose city and tower. As a result of this collective rebellion and apostasy, the Lord severely judged them by scattering them across the face of the earth in confusing the language that united them. This was an act of grace by God which would protect humanity from carrying out a similar wholesale rebellion in the future. In this lesson we learn that those who proudly stand against the Sovereign God in their rebellion will always lose.

  1. Man’s foolishness: “Come let us make” (vv. 1-3)
  2. Man’s sinfulness: “Come let us build” (v. 4)
  3. God’s gracious judgement: “Come let us confuse” (vv. 5-9)
