The Fatal Consequences of Putting God Second
After Jacob’s daughter Dinah was defiled by Shechem, the son of a local Canaanite ruler, Jacob’s sons gained revenge by deceitfully inducing the Shechemites to accept circumcision as the condition of the marriage. This enabled the sons to slaughter the incapacitated males of the city and plunder all their goods. This act of vengeance led to great fear from Jacob. In this study we learn that putting God second makes us vulnerable to worldly influences, which can lead to fatal consequences.
- When God is second, we become ambivalent to worldly influences (34:1-3)
- When God is second, we become passive and indifferent to sin (34:4-24)
- When God is second, we pursue justice unrighteously (34:25-31)
