Chapter 1 – The Doctrine of the Scriptures

Where can we go to find out about God?

We can ask our Dad and Mum, other family members, or the Pastor at church. But where do they learn about God? The one place we can go to that gives us all the answers we need is God’s book. Another name for this book is the “Bible”. The Bible is very special because it is what God has spoken and it tells us what we need to know about Him.

What is the Bible?

The Bible is made up of 66 different books. Some of them are really short and others are really long. These 66 books are divided into two parts – the Old Testament (39 books) and the New Testament (27 books). The Bible is not a normal book because the Bible is God’s Word. It comes from Him and tells us about Him. The Bible tells us about God, people, sin, and Jesus.

Who wrote the Bible?

God wrote the Bible, but He did this by choosing around forty men who wrote what God wanted them to write (2 Pet. 1:21). These men came from three different continents (Asia, Africa, and Europe) over a time of around 1,600 years. Even though they all didn’t know each other or discuss what they were writing, their words were true because they wrote what God wanted them to write.

Why is the Bible Important?

The Bible is important because it is God’s Word (1 Thess. 2:13). God’s Word is true (John 17:17), precious (Psalm 19:10), and helpful (2 Tim. 3:16). The Bible gives us the truth about God and how we can know Him. Also, the Bible tells us what God hates and what God loves. As we read and study the Bible, we are able to know and obey God’s ways.
