The Atrocity of Abortion

The Atrocity of Abortion

Baby

The fact that you are reading this is a sign that you are in existence. Why do you exist instead of not existing? That is a really important question, and your answer to that question will influence the way you view and live your life. You are here, but why are you here? The answer to that question is found in the fact that there is meaning and significance to your existence.

Life really is taken for granted by many. Stop for a moment and listen to the birds outside, look at the variety of trees and smell some flowers; life is all around us. But when it comes to your life, what makes it meaningful and significant? The answer is found in the fact that you were made by God. You are not here for some random reason, nor are you here by mistake. Regardless of how you think or feel at times, your life is significant and has meaning.

Because your existence is not random or an accident, but rather the outcome of deliberate act by God, this is what makes your life significant and meaningful. The life that you have is a gift from God. You exist because God chose that you would exist. This gift of life grants you amazing opportunities to enjoy His creation. Whether you get to see, touch, hear, smell or taste, each of these are amazing opportunities God has granted. But this opportunity to live also means that you are steward of what God has given. It is then your privilege to live your life so that He will receive the glory, and so that you can be more effective in serving Him.

Those who promote the idea that we are mere accidents or the product of an evolutionary process strip away the dignity and significance of human life. The Bible tells us that when God created man He “crowned him with glory and honor” (Psalm 8:5). That is no small thing and shows us how significant human life is in the eyes of God. In addition this, the Bible says that man was made in the image of God. This makes mankind distinct from the animal kingdom. This means there is a wonderful dignity in the life of a human being.

These are some reasons that reveal the seriousness of No. 6 of the Ten Commandments, which says, “You shall not murder” (Exodus 20:13). This is a short and straight forward statement. The prohibition of course is not limited to murdering someone outside of the womb, this command includes the atrocity of abortion. Regardless of one’s feelings or opinions, to abort an unborn child is murder. This act is an atrocity. It is defiance against the Creator of human life and a complete disregard to the meaning and value of human life.

We ought to be praying for women who are considering the option of abortion, desiring that they would be awakened to this devastation and comforted with the challenges they may face. We ought to pray for our society that they will see what a cruel act this is on the unborn. We ought to pray for our leaders that they would see their role in protecting the lives of the innocent. Human life is such an amazing gift that God has granted.
