What do we say of those who have professed to be Christians, and even showed a lot of evidence in their lives, yet choose to go their own way, not ever appearing to ‘return’ to the Lord. How do we explain that?

When we grasp even an ounce of the incredible mercy of God in saving us, despite our rebellion towards Him, we will not place demands on God any more.
Pride is the main obstacle in our hearts that stops us coming to God. It is the spiritual disease that puts the focus on oneself and not on God. It is a condition that is inherit in all of us.
The devil can only suggest something, offer an alternative pathway, knock on the door. It’s our choice if we let him in or follow him.
If we think Satan (the devil) and demons are fictional, therefore being ignorant to their subtle but deadly schemes to lure us away from God, than he is achieving his goal. Christians must be aware that every day they are caught up in an ‘unseen’ battle to which most people are oblivious.
