After being falsely accused of speaking against the temple and the law of Moses Stephen is given the opportunity to defend himself. In what is recognised as the longest sermon in Acts, and one of the greatest sermons of all time, Stephen reviews Israel’s history and shows that they are the ones liable for blasphemy and they, like their fathers before them, continually resist the Holy Spirit through the rejection of God’s messengers. Israel’s behaviour in the past and the behaviour of Jewish leaders in the present demonstrates their need for salvation. This sermon highlights the patient, abundant grace of God toward rebellious sinners, and acts as a warning not to harden our hearts against God’s grace.
