“Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” This was the question Paul asked a group of about 12 men upon arriving in Ephesus around AD53. A misunderstanding of this question, and its associated context, has caused much confusion regarding how the Holy Spirit dwells in and operates through believers today. Our study will help us understand the unique historical context of this passage and better inform us regarding the work of the Holy Spirit in the life and ministry of all believers who profess Jesus as Lord and Saviour. We will learn that the Holy Spirit’s presence is the sign of true belief in Jesus Christ and His power is the means of establishing and strengthening Christ’s church. The divisions for the message are:
- The Holy Spirit’s noticeable presence (vv. 1-4)
- The Holy Spirit’s necessary power (vv. 6-7)
- The Holy Spirit’s normal process (vv. 8-10)
