Rightly or wrongly, I consider myself a fairly open person – a “what you see is what you get” kind of guy.
But, there are some things that people will never know about me.
Some things I don’t want them to know – things about me that I’m not proud of; some things that I consider personal; some habits that are idiosyncratic; others just plain silly. But for the most part, these are things simply not worth knowing. You get the idea – too much information.
If you are a married man, you will understand that our wives know us best – warts and all – perhaps even better than we know ourselves. My wife knows most of the things about me that others never see, but even my wife doesn’t know everything about me. She’s not with me 24/7. And intentionally or otherwise, I like everyone else, apply a form of ‘censorship’ to my persona.
For example, I may behave in a particular way when with one group of people and in another way when with a different group. Think about it – we all do this. When I’m with a group of men I behave in one way, but if the group included women, then in another. Or consider this – when children are around we behave in a manner appropriate to children. So to some extent our ‘audience’ determines our behaviour. Now, look at my opening sentence – is it true? Perhaps not as much as I thought.
So where does the 2,366,820,000 come in?
Well, that’s the number of seconds in an average lifetime. Only God knows these (1 Samuel 16:7). And only God knows our secrets, our inner thoughts, and our heart. He is never fooled by our behaviour. He simply knows us like no other, including ourselves.
My response to this? Thank you, God, for loving me anyway.
