According to Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt, young people should be allowed to change their names to escape their misspent youth. He also predicted that in the future, Google will know so much about its users that the search engine will be able to help them plan their lives.
Wow!
What an amazing statement! No doubt, many find this kind of personal invasion quite frightening. And legislators are scrambling to curb the degree to which technology allows companies to know our private lives.
Individuals and companies are springing up on the Net to warn against and exploit this identity-theft fear.
We marvel at and fear this level of sophisticated technology. But…
we have much more to fear.
O Lord, you have searched me and known me!
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
you discern my thoughts from afar.You search out my path and my lying down
and are acquainted with all my ways.
Even before a word is on my tongue,
behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.You hem me in, behind and before,
and lay your hand upon me. (Psalm 139:1-5)
Changing our names won’t protect us.
There is only one change that protects – the change God works in those who place their faith in the work of Christ. The Holy Spirit takes our wicked, vile, God-hating heart and re-creates it in true righteousness and holiness – in the image of Jesus Christ – the image of God. This is the gospel – that Christ died for sinners.
“…if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17
Then we will rejoice with the Psalmist when he says:
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very well. Psalm 139:6Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
it is high; I cannot attain it. Psalm 139: 14
